Around 80 Labour lawmakers have now said Starmer should stand down or at least set out a timetable for his departure.
LONDON (AP) — U.K. Prime MinisterKeir Starmerinsisted Tuesday that he has no intention of resigning as calls grew louder within his Labour Party for him to step down and some junior members of his government quit in protest. A day before the state opening of Parliament when the government will present its legislative program for the coming year, Starmer tried to shore up support within his Cabinet. Starmer’s future has become a hot topic over the past few feverish days followinghistoric lossesfor the Labour Party in local elections last week, which if repeated in a national election that has to be held by 2029, would see it overwhelmingly ejected from power. Though no Cabinet member has quit or publicly stated the prime minister should step aside for a change in leader, there’s growing speculation that the ambitious health secretary, Wes Streeting, will inform Starmer that his days are numbered when they meet on Wednesday. Streeting has many supporters within the parliamentary party, including some of those who resigned from Starmer’s government on Tuesday, which stoked speculation that Starmer could suffer the fate of Boris Johnson in 2022 when dozens of ministers quit en masse andforced his departure. While more than 100 members of Parliament signed a letter saying it was “no time for a leadership contest,” about 90 others saidStarmer should stand downor at least set out a timetable for his departure. That’s not enough to trigger a leadership contest, though, as no candidate has issued a challenge to the prime minister. Under Labour party rules, a fifth of its lawmakers in the House of Commons, or 81 members, must publicly give their backing to a single candidate for a leadership election to take place. On Tuesday, several junior ministers, some of whom were elected for the first time inLabour’s landslide election victoryin July 2024, resigned and urged Starmer to do the same. Miatta Fahnbulleh, minister of housing, communities and local government, was the first to quit, urging Starmer “to do the right thing for the country.” She was followed by Jess Phillips, the safeguarding minister and a prominent member of the Labour Party. In her resignation letter, she described Starmer as a “good man fundamentally” but unable to make bold changes. “I know you care deeply, but deeds, not words are what matter,” Phillips said. “I’m not sure we are grasping this rare opportunity with the gusto that’s needed and I cannot keep waiting around for a crisis to push for faster progress.” Despite the party’s dominant win driving out the Conservatives after 14 years in power, Labour’s popularity has plunged and Starmer is getting much of the blame. The reasons include a series of policy missteps, a perceived lack of vision on the prime minister’s part, a struggling British economy and questions over his judgment. Starmer’s choice of Peter Mandelson as U.K. ambassador to Washington despite ties to the convicted sex offenderJeffrey Epsteinhas continued to haunt him. At the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Starmer said he took responsibility for the losses in last week’s elections but would fight on. Labour was squeezed from the right and the left, losing votes to both anti-immigrant Reform UK and the Green Party, as well as nationalist parties in Scotland and Wales. The result reflects the increasing fragmentation of U.K. politics, long dominated by Labour and the Conservatives. Starmer told his Cabinet that there’s a process to oust a leader and it hadn’t been triggered. “The country expects us to get on with governing,” Starmer said. “The past 48 hours have been destabilizing for government and that has a real economic cost for our country and for families.” That cost was evident in financial markets on Tuesday, with the interest rate charged on British government bonds up by more than those of comparable nations. That shows investors think it’s increasingly risky to hold British government debt. As Cabinet members left 10 Downing Street, some voiced their support for the embattled prime minister. Works and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden said nobody publicly challenged Starmer at the meeting, while Business Secretary Peter Kyle said the prime minister was showing “really steadfast leadership.” Later, Starmer’s deputy David Lammy warned Labour lawmakers that the only beneficiary of the party’s “navel-gazing” is the populist right and the leader of Reform UK,Nigel Farage, in particular. “He has my full support, and what I say to colleagues is, look, let’s just step back,” he said. “Take a breath.” Health Secretary Wes Streeting, long believed to be preparing for a leadership challenge against Starmer, was among senior ministers who dodged a barrage of shouted questions from a gaggle of reporters outside. “Wes Streeting, do you want the job, or not?” a man yelled from across the street. “Are you measuring the curtains?” Streeting is expected to meet Starmer early on Wednesday, before King Charles III outlines the government’s program, to discuss the future. The other two names often touted as possible successors areAngela Rayner, the former deputy prime minister who had to quit last year over an unpaid tax bill. She has long set herself apart as a different kind of politician with a compelling personal story, brought up in social housing and leaving school at 16 as a teen mother. Andy Burnham, the popular mayor of Greater Manchester, is widely perceived to be one of the strongest candidates but is not currently eligible because he’s not in Parliament. To get in the race, he’ll have to find a seat where he can be elected. That may involve a close ally of Burnham’s in the northwest of England vacating their seat for him to stand for election. However, he may be blocked as was the case earlier this year or could even lose, if last week’s results are any guide. ___ Danica Kirka and Sylvia Hui in London contributed to this report.

Oil and gas company Lansdowne Oil & Gas has embarked on an arbitration battle to pursue its Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) claim against Ireland over the country’s refusal to issue a lease undertaking for an oil and gas field in the North Celtic Sea, which is operated by Barryroe Offshore Energy’s subsidiary, Exola DAC. Following the filing of a request for arbitration (RFA) regarding itsdispute with Irelandover theBarryroe oil and gas fieldat the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) in Washington, D.C., on May 8, 2026, Lansdowne Oil & Gas ended up receiving written confirmation from ICSID that the ICSID Secretary-General registered the request. The company sees this as an important step in the arbitration process, which will now be followed by the appointment of a tribunal. The firm intends to continue to vigorously assert its rights under the Energy Charter Treaty in its dispute with Ireland by pursuing a claim of a minimum of $100 million plus interest. This comes after the ECT Secretariat announced on April 27, 2026, the receipt of notification regarding the country’s withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty, which will become effective one year after its notification to the Secretariat, from April 28, 2027. However, Ireland will continue to be bound bythe 20-year sunset clause; thus, its withdrawal from the ECT will have no bearing on Lansdowne’s case.

riduzioni delle emissioni di NOx (-16%) e di particolato;

Experts say the transmission of hantavirus between humans is so rare that a pandemic is nearly 'impossible'.
Save Share US and French evacuees from Hantavirus-hit ship test positive The last of the passengers on thehantavirus-struck MV Hondius cruise shiphave been flown to the Netherlands. But new cases are emerging as researchers race to track down where the outbreak originated. As authorities seek to arrange quarantines and access to health facilities for the passengers, communities where some of the passengers have gone have responded with anger and protests against what many perceive as risk of exposure to the virus. At the heart of those fears is the collective experience the world suffered through six years ago with the COVID-19 pandemic, which sent the planet into lockdown and killed nearly 15 million people in two years. But the hantavirus is very different from COVID-19 in how it spreads, how deadly it is and how likely it is to trigger another global crisis, public health experts said. “I need you to hear me clearly: this is not another COVID. The current public health risk from hantavirus remains low. My colleagues and I have said this unequivocally, and I will say it again to you now,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO),saidin a statement on Saturday. Here is a a breakdown of the key differences between the hantavirus and COVID-19: Hantavirusesare a family of viruses that cause two main illnesses in humans. One is known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) and primarily attacks the lungs. The other, haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), mainly affects the kidneys. The viruses arenamed after the Hantan Riverin South Korea, where the first virus belonging to the family was isolated in 1978. By that time, researchers had tried for decades to identify the cause of what was known as the Korean haemorrhagic fever, which afflicted 3,000 United Nations soldiers during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. The virus is arare infectiontransmitted to humans by rodents. The virus is most commonly spread by infected rodents, which can carry it in their urine, saliva and droppings. When these materials dry out and become airborne, humans can become infected by inhaling the contaminated particles. HPS attracts the most attention because it has a high fatality rate, killing about 40 percent of the people it infects, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The death rate for HFRS is less clear with studies suggesting anything from about 1 percent to 15 percent. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome usually begins with flu-like symptoms, such as fatigue and fever, between one and eight weeks after exposure, according to the CDC. Four to 10 days later, coughing, shortness of breath and fluid in the lungs appear. Diagnosis in the first 72 hours of infection is difficult, the CDC said, and symptoms can easily be mistaken for the flu. Research suggested hantaviruses have circulated for centuries with outbreaks recorded in parts of Asia and Europe. A previously unknown group of hantaviruses emerged in the early 1990s in the southwestern United States, causing a severe respiratory illness now known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The CDC began tracking the disease after a 1993 outbreak in the Four Corners region, where the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah meet. The Andes strain of the hantavirus, which causes HPS, is the only hantavirus clearly shown to spread from person to person to a limited extent. The virus detected among passengers of the MV Hondius was the Andes strain, which drives most HPS cases in Chile and Argentina, where the MV Hondius cruise began. According to the WHO and public health experts, person-to-person transmission of the hantavirus is rare and occurs as a result of close, prolonged contact, such as close proximity within the same household or intimate contact. It does not spread like an airborne virus through casual social contact. “Occasional human-to-human transmission events may occur but require specific circumstances and long exposure times,” Tomas Strandin, a virologist and university researcher at the University of Helsinki in Finland, told Al Jazeera. “However, infections via rodents are becoming more widespread due to climate change, but these are local infection events.” The WHO on Tuesday confirmed the 11th hantavirus infection from the MV Hondius outbreak after Spain’s Ministry of Health said a Spanish passenger had tested positive. The announcement was made the day after the evacuation of the cruise ship was completed. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday that two planes carrying the final28 evacueeshad landed in the Netherlands. Their arrival from Spain’s Canary Islands concluded a complex operation in which 94 people were evacuated and repatriated to about 20 countries where they have entered a period of quarantine. Officials from the US Department of Health and Human Services said on Monday that one of the 18 American passengers evacuated from the ship had tested positive at a biocontainment unit in Nebraska while the others are being monitored and tested after potential exposure. TheMV Hondius, which departed from South America on April 1,anchored at a port on Tenerifefor the evacuation. A total of 150 people from 23 countries were on board the ship when it left Argentina, and some had disembarked before the ship reached the Canaries. Three people – a Dutch couple and a German tourist – have died in thehantavirus outbreakon the ship. The ship is now on its way to the Netherlands, where it will be disinfected. According to a hypothesis by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the European Union’s principal disease prevention agency, some of the ship’s passengers caught the hantavirus while spending time in Argentina before boarding the MV Hondius. The hantavirus isendemic to Argentina, which means the virus is constantly present and has a predictable and relatively stable prevalence there. While evacuations of the passengers were under way, Gianfranco Spiteri, ECDC’s head of global epidemic intelligence, told Al Jazeera: “Passengers and crew continue to disembark and to be medically evacuated to their countries of origin. At disembarkation, they are all considered high-risk and repatriated, whether symptomatic or not, through noncommercial flights.” “ECDC continues to work closely with the [EU] member states, the European Commission, WHO and other partners to support a coordinated response and information-sharing. In connection with this outbreak, ECDC rapidly engaged the EU Public Health Reference Laboratory for emerging, rodent-borne and zoonotic viral pathogens to provide support to the member states to ensure rapid and high-quality diagnostics.” Medical experts said they believe the measures governments are currently taking are adequate. “Quarantine of individuals with potential exposure is important, and quarantine should be extensive since the virus may present an incubation period for up to several weeks during which it is undetectable,” Strandin said. Hantaviruses and coronaviruses, several strains of which cause COVID-19, are both ribonucleic acid (RNA) viruses, which means they use RNA as their genetic material instead of DNA. But the viruses have key structural differences. Coronaviruses have a prominent spike protein protruding from their surface, which gives them a crown-like appearance. Hantaviruses, on the other hand, have a shell made up of hooks called glycoproteins, which form a grid-like pattern. A glycoprotein is a molecule that’s part protein, part sugar. This structural difference is primarily why COVID-19 is highly contagious while hantaviruses are not nearly as transmissible. The COVID-19 spike protein is the part of the virus that allows it to attach itself to human cells. Human cells have tiny protein structures called ACE2 (angiotensin‑converting enzyme 2) receptors, which can act as docking stations for certain viruses. The COVID-19 spike protein has adapted to easily latch onto the ACE2 receptors, which are abundantly present in the upper respiratory system, including the nose and throat. The virus can easily replicate while latching onto these receptors, making several copies of itself that can be coughed or sneezed out. This can release tiny droplets or aerosols containing the virus into the air. Another person nearby can inhale them, and the droplets can enter their nose, throat and lungs and cause an infection. The glycoproteins in the hantavirus structure, on the other hand, don’t latch onto ACE2 receptors, but instead bind to β3 integrins, which are receptor proteins found on human cells. Unlike ACE2 receptors, β3 integrins are located deep in the lungs and on the inner lining of blood vessels. As a result, hantaviruses primarily infect the lower respiratory system and the blood vessel lining, causing leakage and serious illness there. So if a person infected with a hantavirus sneezes or coughs, their droplets might contain some virus but generally not very much, which helps explain why human-to-human spread is rare. Additionally, COVID-19 is a positive-sense RNA virus. This means that upon entering a human host, it immediately starts to replicate. Hantaviruses are negative-sense RNA viruses, having to go through an extra step to become positive-sense viruses before they can start replicating. COVID-19 has a short incubation period, from two to 14 days, allowing for rapid spread. Hantaviruses have a longer incubation period, from one to eight weeks, which also slows down transmission. However, Strandin said, while COVID-19 is typically “better controlled in previously healthy individuals”, hantaviruses “can cause severe infections in healthy younger individuals”. And if a hantavirus does manage to infect the upper airways, it becomes easier for it to leave the body in droplets when someone breathes, talks, coughs or sneezes. Because the Andes strain is one of the few hantaviruses with documented person‑to‑person transmission, it might be a variant that does enable infection of the upper airways, Strandin said. “Andes hantavirus may be different from other hantaviruses in that it could infect upper respiratory airways eventually due to high systemic virus loads, but this is rare,” he said. Spiteri said people who develop symptoms should be assessed quickly and, if needed, evacuated to hospitals that can provide intensive care. “Anyone with symptoms is tested after leaving the ship, but a negative test doesn’t always rule out infection, so follow‑up is still important,” he said. He added that healthcare workers caring for sick passengers should use protective gear to prevent close contact transmission and stronger precautions are needed if treatment procedures could create airborne particles. “Passengers who leave the ship have received clear instructions on what to do and what symptoms to watch for until doctors can confirm whether they are infected. Passengers and crew who may have been exposed should be monitored for symptoms after leaving the ship and referred for medical care if needed,” he said. “According to ECDC’s scientific advice, passengers and crew who have symptoms require immediate medical isolation, testing and medical care while those who do not have symptoms are asked to quarantine and monitor for symptoms for up to six weeks.” Experts said the low chances of human-to-human transmission make it almost “impossible” for hantaviruses to cause the next pandemic. A pandemic is a fast‑spreading epidemic that affects many countries. Besides COVID-19, other pandemics have included the H1N1 swine flu, which was declared a pandemic by the WHO in 2009, as well as historic waves of plague and cholera. Spiteri added that the risk of hantaviruses to the general population in Europe remains low. “Widespread transmission is not expected. Any transmission is likely to remain limited due to the close contact required and the infection prevention and control measures in place,” Spiteri said. “Transmission is normally through rodents while person-to-person spread occurs only in rare close-contact situations. As the natural reservoir is absent in Europe, rodent-to-human transmission is not expected.” “People shouldn’t panic since human-to-human transmission is so rare that a pandemic is impossible,” Strandin said. He added that the long incubation period of the virus also allows more time to quarantine exposed individuals and virus spread can be efficiently controlled.
From power line and bridge inspections to remote and heavy cargo deliveries, autonomous AI drones are becoming the supply chain's version of air traffic controllers.
Supply chains plagued with inefficiencies, bottlenecks and manpower issues are getting a boost fromAI-enabled drones. Today's AI drones in the enterprise provide new data capturing capabilities, autonomous functionality and improved logistical operations. Unlike early unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which were manually flown by a person on the ground, the new AI drones can navigate and fly autonomously, detect and recognize objects, use advanced algorithms to maintain stability, interact with other technologies and automatically deliver packages and cargo. Supply chain drone applicationsusually have a person monitoring activity behind the scenes. "Our pilots are like air traffic controllers," explained Beth Flippo, CEO and founder of Dexa, formerly Drone Express, an autonomous drone delivery company specializing in last-mile logistics for local retail and food. "They sit behind a screen, and they load the mission in of what it's supposed to do, and if the drone is having a problem, they can issue a command, like 'land,' 'go to a safe zone' or 'launch your parachute.'" Otherwise, Dexa's delivery drones are fully autonomous. "These literally are pilotless vehicles, and eventually we won't even need the pilot to load the mission in," Flippo said. AI drones will then "truly become air traffic controllers," she said. "They will just be watching aircraft like air traffic today." This article is part of To prevent disruptions along the supply chain, autonomous AI drones are being used remotelyto inspect bridges and power lines. "In autonomous inspections, AI becomes the operator," said Alden Jones, vice president of product management at drone maker Skydio. "The drone understands its surroundings, plans safe paths and collects data from consistent angles with minimal operator input." The collected data isprocessed by AI software"to detect early signs of failure, like corrosion or cracks, turning raw images into actionable insights," Jones explained. "Together, these steps enable a shift from reactive inspections to condition-based maintenance, where problems can be identified earlier and addressed before they lead to failures." AI drones are performing automatic bridge inspections for the Ohio Department of Transportation. Before using Skydio autonomous drones, Ohio bridge inspectors required $800,000 aerial lift trucks involving humans in high-risk operations. The AI drone bridge inspections are now done statewide eventually with more than 40 deployments, lowering the risks and costswhile increasing inspection data quality and speed. AI drone inspections are growing globally with many aimed at lowering personal risk and saving time. The staff at the Yunnan Power Grid in China, for example, would take 20 days to inspect 60 miles of critical power lines, climbing each tower in mountainous terrain. Autonomous drones from UAV manufacturer Jouav now perform detailed inspectionsusing AI analytics to identify issueswithout onsite human intervention. Inspections of bridges, powerlines and hard-to-reach areas are easier targets for AI drones. "At the moment, we're using AI mostly in our powerline inspection product where AI is detecting faults on powerlines with approximately 90% accuracy," said Alex Brown, CEO of Skyports Drone Service. "It still has a human in the loop but makes things so much more efficient. In our surveillance business, we're using AI more, too -- for example, in automatically recognizing objects that the drone is looking at." In addition tovisual data collection and analysis, one of the main functions of AI in drones is to manage the drone itself. "A lot of it comes down to sensing on board the drone, so that it doesn't crash into things as well as the intelligent operation and navigation, helping it recognize the world that it's in and what it's sensing," said Scott Shtofman, vice president and counsel for regulatory affairs at the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International. "AI is providing some intelligence, analysis of what the drone is seeing, as well as ways to keep the drone from running into things." Enterprise drone applications are increasingly transporting packages or things.AI drones can move things for many industries, from suppliers to parcel delivery services. Winsupply, a 70-year-old construction distribution company, wanted to automate the movement of supplies to its business customers. "We would take product out of our distribution center, and we have what we call a will-call counter," said Ryan Whitney, director of enterprise data at Winsupply. "UPS comes and does pickups there, and the associates at the will-call counter would package up, say, a box of PVC and schedule 40 elbow pipes … We would take 10 of those [fittings], put them in a box, and we'd hand it off to the drone express team. They attach it to the drone, and they would fly it off to the job site and drop it down at the job site," saving contractors "a lot of time and energy." Drone payload weights continue to increase from relatively small commercial supplies to significantly heavier pieces of cargo or work equipment. An all-electric AI drone from Air can automatically transport 550 pounds for 100 miles. "It's all automatic," said Rani Plaut, Air CEO and co-founder. An Air drone uses AI to look for locations and automatically flies to a designated destination and waits for human approval to land. "Behind the scenes, an operator is watching it," Plaut noted. If the drone doesn't receive approval to land, the AI technology on board selects the best location to land. Sandi Banerjee, president and COO of drone developer Arcanus, said the company is considering using drones that could lift 650 pounds. "Imagine replacing heavy lift ground transport to a UAV, so something that could pick up, say, an HVAC unit and lift it to a top of a building or move it to a point where a crane can then pick it up and hoist it, moving supplies along a predetermined route," Banerjee explained. The U.K.'s national mail service Royal Mail is legally required to deliver all types and sizes of packages to 32 million addresses, five days a week for parcels and six days a week for letters, according to Chris Paxton, strategic insight and innovation manager at Royal Mail. "There are two main use cases for drones," he said. "One of them is delivering to difficult-to-reach addresses." Deliveries were required to remote locations, such as the Orkney Islands, where parcels were transported on the daily ferry boat but went undelivered in bad weather. Royal Mail and Skyports Drone Services launched the Orkney I-Port trial in 2023 to use drones to transport packages with weights up to 13 pounds. The drones delivered packages between operation mail centers, not directly to consumers. "What we've done with our drone trials is look at how we can use drones to connect those operational sites," Paxton said. "We fly things on the drone from one site out to the postmen and postwomen who ultimately do the deliveries." In the U.K., the Royal Mail needs permission from the Civil Aviation Authority to do drone flights between mail centers. "It's a lot easier than somebody like Amazon, who's got to prove to the CAA that they're able to deliver to all the [individual customer] addresses," Paxton said. "Every single address is going to have a different risk profile. I might have a toddler running around, you might have a dog running around, there might be a tree that's overhanging one property, there might not be a tree in another one." In the U.S., drones are regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration with certain drones allowed to fly beyond the visual line of sight. FAA Part 135 is a domestic air carrier license for unmanned flights. "It's the only way you can fly cargo for compensation in the national airspace," Dexa's Flippo said. "If you don't have a 135, you are not allowed to earn money for those deliveries ... It's kind of like the Holy Grail. There are only four other companies in the U.S. that have it, and it's Amazon, Google, Wing, Zipline and us." Whether for remote inspections or package deliveries, AI drones can save considerable time and increase operational efficiencies -- and they're getting better at what they do. Danish wave energy firm Wavepiston and its Spain-headquartered partner Bluenewables have submitted all permitting documentation for a site in Gran Canaria where a pilot wave energy farm is planned to be developed. Wavepistondescribes the submission of permitting documentation for the selected site on Gran Canaria’s northern coast as another key milestone in its commercial wave energy development. Furthermore, the company is continuing talks with the local government to progress toward the commercial project. As for other regions, the Danish company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Iceland-based Haf-Afl to explore the development of commercial wave energy projects, under which the partners will assess how wave energy can complement Iceland’s energy mix with scalable, sustainable solutions. “We continue to strengthen our partnerships across key markets. In Barbados, we are formalising an agreement to deploy a pilot wave energy farm building upon our existing Memorandum of Understanding. In Gran Canaria, we remain in close contact with the government regarding the development of a pilot wave energy farm on the north coast. In Martinique, we have deployed a wave data buoy at the selected site, advancing our project to the next phase,”saidMichael Henriksen, Wavepiston’s CEO. “At the same time, significant effort is channelled into our investor dialogues to secure our next round of equity. It is taking longer than expected, although some would argue that is according to expectation. Reflecting on broader market conditions, the strategic need for renewable energy, security of supply, local production, independence on fossil fuels, resilience, and water is clearer than ever. Whales are increasingly exposed to traffic - and ship strikes.
Save Share The United States-Israel war on Iran has disrupted global supplies of energy, fertilisers, medicines and even helium, devastating economies around the world. Now it’s also threatening whales off the coast of South Africa. Fighting involving the Houthis had already turned vessels away from the Red Sea and Suez Canal since 2023. Now the rival restrictions on transit through the Strait of Hormuz, imposed by Iran and the US, have amplified that shift. But the rising volume of shipping traffic near South Africa’s coast has “substantially increased” the risks of whales being struck, researchers have warned. That’s according to a study presented this month at a meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), which noted that South Africa’s southwestern coast is increasingly busy, affecting the area’s significant populations of whales. Traffic in the Red Sea area was initially disrupted back in November 2023, when Houthi rebels began targeting vessels sailing the area in solidarity with Palestinians amid Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza. More recently, the attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently blocked by Iran, have also caused shipping companies to reroute vessels from the Middle East to go around South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope. The disruptions have almost doubled the traffic in the area. At least 89 commercial vessels sailed around Southern Africa between March 1 and April 24, according to the International Monetary Fund’s PortWatch Monitor. In the same period in 2023, there were only 44 vessels. South Africa’s waters are home to more than 40 whale species. The Cape of Good Hope, the country’s southernmost tip, is known to host populations of southern right whales, humpback whales, and Bryde’s whales. There are also Orcas or killer whales, sperm whales, Minke whales, and dolphins in the area. Large super-pods of humpback whales feed in the area and travel from there on an annual migration to Antarctica. Authorities say they are the largest groups of humpbacks known on Earth. Some studies put their total numbers at between 11,000 and 13,000. Many species were threatened by commercial whaling in the 20th century. Although the southern right and humpback whales have recovered, others, such as the Antarctic Blue, Fin, and Sei whales, are still listed on the South African Red List as Endangered or Critically Endangered. Whales are directly affected by the increased traffic, as it increases their chances of being struck by a moving vehicle. “There have been videos of people on cargo vessels that were going through high densities of humpback whales,” researcher Els Vermeulen of the University of Pretoria told the AFP news agency. Vermeulen, who led the study presented at the IWC meeting, said in such cases, whales are not often aware of the danger, and could be distracted by feeding. “Obviously, their social media post was all about, ‘Wow, look how many nice whales we see,'” Vermeulen said. “My heart stopped – you know that they’re striking a couple of whales.” Fast traffic, which poses the greatest risks, has quadrupled, she added. Whales don’t yet know how to adapt to ships, Chris Johnson, the global lead of the World Wildlife Fund’s Protecting Whales and Dolphins Initiative, said. “You assume that, if you hear a loud noise, you leave. But that’s not the case with some species,” he said. For example, when Blue whales in Los Angeles hear a ship approaching, they just sink below the surface, he added. Whales are also at risk because of their behavioural changes, which some experts have attributed to climate change and other factors. The humpbacks in South Africa, for example, only started feeding off the west coast, which is growing increasingly busy, in 2011, said Ken Findlay, a blue economy consultant who contributed to the report. It has, researchers say, because of increased human activity. Vermeulen and her team had previously conducted a study on deaths among southern right whales (SRW) in the Western Cape Coast area back in November 2022, after observing increasing human activity in the area, such as fishing. They solely used data collated by government agencies. The results, published in the IWC Journal of Cetacean Research and Management, found that between 1999 and 2019, there were 11 fatal ship strikes out of a total of 97 deaths. There were another 16 ship strikes that did not clearly lead to death. While entanglement in fishing gear was the biggest cause of death, the researchers concluded that deaths from ship strikes are likely undercounted – whales hit by ships in the open seas often sink to the bottom of the ocean. Some suggestions from the report presented by Vermeulen’s team to the whaling commission proposed that even small shifts of the traffic lanes away from the coast of South Africa could reduce the risk of strikes to some whale species by 20 to 50 percent. Whale populations in other parts are also at risk and need protection. One company, the Swiss-based MSC, has already begun re-directing its ships to protect critical whale habitats, notably around Greece (Hellenic Trench) to protect sperm whales and off Sri Lanka to protect blue whales. Experts say measures like speed reduction programmes, which significantly lower the risk of lethal collisions and reduce underwater ocean noise, can help. Researchers are similarly testing if ships could be alerted to the presence of whale super pods via radio messaging or specially-designed apps. South Africa’s Environment Ministry told AFP that “all available solutions and mitigation measures will be examined” to protect the whales in the Cape of Good Hope. “Once the scientific studies and assessments have been completed, the maritime authorities will be on the front line, alongside the (ministry) to chart the way forward,” it said.
Kuwait has accused Iran of sending an armed Revolutionary Guard team to launch a failed attack on an island in the Middle East nation
Kuwait has accused Iran of sending an armed Revolutionary Guard team to launch a failed attack on an island in the Middle East nation DUBAI, United Arab Emirates --Kuwait accused Iran on Tuesday of sending an armed paramilitary Revolutionary Guard team to launch a failed attack earlier this month on an island in the Middle East nation home to a China-funded port project. The accusation by Kuwait of an Iranian link to the incident came just before U.S. President Donald Trump travels to Beijing for a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Iran didn't immediately acknowledge the allegation by Kuwait, which came under repeated attack by Iran in the war and even during the shaky ceasefire still holding in the region. However, the allegation and ongoing attacks throughout the region have threatened to tip the region back into open warfare. The accusation came as the U.S. ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, said that Israel sentIron Domeanti-missile batteries and personnel to operate them to the United Arab Emirates to defend the country during the war as well. That underlined the growing defense relationship between Israel and the UAE, countries long suspicious of Iran. It also represents the first publicly acknowledged deployment of Israel's military to the Emirates, a federation of seven sheikdoms on the Arabian Peninsula home to Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The narrow Strait of Hormuz remains in Tehran's chokehold and negotiations between the U.S. and Iran appear at a standstill for the moment — also raising the risk of the conflict breaking out again. Kuwait said that a team of six armed members of the Guard tried to infiltrate Bubiyan Island in the northwest corner of the Persian Gulf near Iraq and Iran on May 1. It accused the team of planning to carry out “hostile acts,” without elaborating. Kuwait said that it detained four of the men, while two escaped when its forces disrupted their infiltration of the island. Kuwait that said one of its security officials had been wounded in the attack, which initially was announced on May 3 without any details. Kuwait identified the men held as two Guard naval captains, a Guard naval lieutenant and a Guard army lieutenant. Bubiyan Island is home to Mubarak Al Kabeer Port, which is under construction as part of China’s “Belt and Road” initiative. That project also came under attack during the war by Iran. Kuwait provided no reason for why it delayed linking the attack to Iran. Trump is traveling this week to China for a summit with Xi, during which Iran will likely be a topic. Beijing long has been a buyer of sanctioned Iranian crude oil and has been hurt by the strait's closure, which has sparked a global energy crisis. Huckabee, a Baptist minister, former governor of Arkansas and one-time presidential candidate, made the comment on stage at an event in Tel Aviv, Israel. “I’d like to say a word of appreciation for United Arab Emirates, the first Abraham accord member,” Huckabee said at the Tel Aviv Conference. “Just look at the benefits. Israel just sent them Iron Dome batteries and personnel to help operate them.” The United Arab Emiratesdiplomaticallyrecognized Israelin 2020. That drew criticism from Iran, long Israel's main regional enemy. Iran didn't immediately respond to Huckabee's remarks, though it has repeatedly suggested over the years that Israel maintained a military and intelligence presence in the Emirates. The UAE and Israel didn't immediately respond to a request for comment over the acknowledgment by Huckabee. However, Huckabee's remarks came after the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, was quoted as saying the same during an event at the Israeli mission there Monday night — suggesting this was an intentional release of the information, likely with the Emiratis' and Israelis' blessing. It comes as the UAE has faced Iranian missile and drone fire even after the ceasefire was reached in the war and has been trying to signal to nervous investors and the public it remains open for business and safe. The UAE also has closed down Iranian government-linked sites in the country since the war began. The Emirates long has been used by both the Iranian government and average Iranians as a place to safely do business offshore from the Islamic Republic. On Thursday during a visit to the Emirates by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, his Emirati counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan accompanied him to an air base where Egyptian pilots and Rafael fighter jets were stationed — the first acknowledgment of a detachment operating in the UAE. Sheikh Mohammed and the UAE strongly backed el-Sissi as he rose to power in 2013 and in the years since. Huckabee added that he was “very optimistic” that additional countries in the region will soon join the Abraham Accords, the 2020 diplomatic recognition deal that also included the Gulf Arab kingdom of Bahrain, for formal relations with Israel. However, many Arab states remain incensed by Israel's wide-ranging military campaigns after Hamas' 2023 attack on the country, which has seen the Gaza Strip leveled and Iran's allies attacked across the wider Mideast. Israel now controls territory in Lebanon and Syria as well. Huckabee in his remarks also sought to shore up U.S. support for the recent war, suggesting that “Israel is the appetizer, America has always been the entrée" for Iran's theocracy. “The Gulf states now understood they will have to make a choice — is it more likely they will be attacked by Iran or Israel?" Huckabee asked. "They see that Israel helped us and Iran attacked us. Israel is not trying to take over your land, and is not sending missiles to you.” Meanwhile Tuesday, prosecutors in Bahrain said at least two dozen people were handed prison sentences on Tuesday on charges including espionage and conspiring with Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. They said three were sentenced to life. Others received shorter Iran-related sentences. Bahrain — an island nation ruled by a Sunni Muslim monarchy with a Shiite-majority population — has sentenced dozens on Iran-related charges since the start of the war. Prosecutors and the Interior Ministry have alleged that Iran maintains cells that carry out espionage and help identify targets there. Rights groups say the island nation has widened a crackdown on dissidents during the war, as well as on Shiites. ___ Lidman reported from Tel Aviv, Israel. Sam Metz contributed to this report from Ramallah, West Bank.

___ Melanie Lidman reported from Tel Aviv, Israel. Aberdeen-headquartered energy solutions business OEG has obtained a long-term multimillion-dollar contract extension to provide assistance during drilling activities off the coast of Australia. With a multi-year contract extension in hand, OEG will support offshore drilling operations in Australia’sBass Strait fielduntil the end of field life, which is expected in 2036. Following an agreement with ExxonMobil, Woodside wasset to becomethe operator of the Bass Strait assets. This deal will see the company supply and manufacture 200 specialist DNV (2.7-1) certified offshore cargo carrying units (CCUs) from its Barry Beach facility in Victoria, Australia. Thanks to the latest extension, six personnel from the company will provide full-service inspection, maintenance, and repair of the units when required, as well as crane and lifting services. As a result, the total number of OEG CCUs and serviced units supporting the operator’s offshore operations in the region will increase to approximately 700. The Bass Strait offshore field began production in the late 1960s. This content is available after accepting the cookies. ExxonMobil handing over reins of Australia’s legacy offshore asset to Woodside Commenting on the contract extension,Beau Robins, Regional Director for Australia and New Zealand at OEG, underlined:“This contract extension reflects a longstanding relationship built over many years. “It also highlights the value of long-term rental agreements in supporting operational planning and equipment availability, reducing unplanned maintenance and helping operators improve efficiency while preserving capital through to end of field life.” The Bass Strait field, which was the first major offshore development in Australia, has supplied a significant proportion of the nation’s oil and gas demand, particularly to Victoria. Several of the Bass Strait offshore facilities have ceased production following field depletion; thus, an active restoration program is underway. OEG, which operates from six locations across Australia and New Zealand, providing integrated solutions to the energy sector, claims that the field has played a key role in supporting domestic energy security while demonstrating long-term production from a mature offshore basin. “OEG’s CCUs are widely recognised for their innovative design and benchmark-setting performance. We look forward to continuing to support operations across Australia with reliable, certified equipment and consistent service,”added Robins. The Bass Strait project, consisting of conventional oil and gas fields in the Gippsland Basin off the southeast coast of Victoria, entails an integrated network of offshore platforms and subsea tie-backs connected via extensive pipeline infrastructure to onshore processing facilities at Longford and Long Island Point. UK designer and manufacturer of uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) ZeroUSV has made a strategic investment in the Manor Marine shipyard, which in the last 12 months constructed and outfitted all four Oceanus12 vessels currently in operation. By becoming a shareholder in Manor Marine, ZeroUSV says it secures production capacity to significantly scale and deliver at pace the design, engineering and build phases of its Oceanus class USVs from Manor Marine’s base in Portland, Dorset. The move is said to further enhance ZeroUSV’s end-to-end domestic production capabilities, while securing long-term business for Manor Marine. Additional manufacturing space may be added from Autumn 2027. Tom O’Neill, Operations Director at Manor Marine, said:“Autonomous vessels represent a new frontier for critical maritime operations supporting defence and energy security objectives, and it’s important that the UK capitalises on its growing reputation in this space. We’re proud that ZeroUSV has made the transition from client to strategic investor; this says a great deal about the trust that our teams have cultivated in the delivery of the fleet to date and sets us up perfectly for deeper collaboration in future.” The Oceanus class USVs are fully robotic and low-carbon, featuring large payload capacity, customizable design, serving as a versatile platform for a wide range of critical maritime operations, including defense, ZeroUSV said. Construction of the first Oceanus17 class USV, a larger 17-meter platform development with the engineering of the Oceanus12, is currently underway and is set for delivery in early July this year. Matthew Ratsey, Co-founder and Managing Director of ZeroUSV, said:“From the outset Manor Marine have proven to be a key partner in delivering the world-class Oceanus12 USV which the 17 is now building on. The investment we are making today is a recognition of that, and a serious statement of intent which will guarantee production capacity, and allow ZeroUSV to continue to scale at an aggressive pace which the market demands. This will be a direct boost to the UK’s sovereign shipbuilding capability and local economic opportunities in the South West.” Take the spotlight and anchor your brand in the heart of the offshore world!
