Offshore surveys are now underway at the Awel y Môr offshore wind farm in […] The post Offshore survey work ramps up at Awel y Môr OWF site After UK CfD award appeared first on Offshore Energy .
Offshore surveys are now underway at the Awel y Môr offshore wind farm in Wales following the project securing a contract for difference (CfD) in the UK’s seventh allocation round (AR7). RWE said the work marks the first package of contracts placed since the CfD award, with contractors Geo and TGS carrying out geotechnical and geophysical surveys across the project’s 78-square-kilometer array area and export cable route. TGS is conducting seabed imaging and geophysical investigations to map the seabed’s geology in detail and identify any major boulders and other seabed features that may impact offshore construction. Geo is undertaking cone penetration testing (CPT) and vibrocore sampling to assess seabed conditions. The company will deploy two vessels, including the newly built heavy-duty CPT rig GeoScope II, which will be used in the wind farm’s array area. The surveys will support further design refinements for the offshore wind farm and the export cable route to the landfall site between Rhyl and Prestatyn. “This additional survey data will enable the team to make design refinements and fine tune our methods for offshore construction, which is currently planned to begin in 2029”,saidJo Pickard, Senior Consents Manager for RWE. According to the developer, the next step for the project is reaching a final investment decision (FID). Onshore construction is planned to begin in 2027 with work on the onshore substation, followed by cable route construction in 2028. The offshore wind farm, expected to have an installed capacity of 775 MW, is planned to be built off the coast of North Wales, adjacent to the existing Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm, and to comprise up to 50 turbines. Awel y Môr is one of the seven extension projects that wereawardeda seabed lease agreement by the Crown Estate in 2020. The UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero granted development consent for the offshore wind project in 2023. In January this year,RWE secured CfDs for 6.9 GW of offshore wind projectsin the UK government’s AR7, including the Awel y Môr offshore wind farm. RWE is developing Awel y Môr with project partners Stadtwerke München (30%) and Siemens Financial Services (10%). Take the spotlight and anchor your brand in the heart of the offshore world! French geophysical services company Viridien has begun a multi-client ocean bottom node (OBN) survey in the Central North Sea, spanning the UK and Norwegian sectors. The dense multi-client OBN survey covers 645 km2 in the Frigg area, with the final processed deliverables to be available in the third quarter of 2027. It is supported by industry funding, Dechun Lin, Head of Earth Data atViridien, said:“The start of this new survey highlights Viridien’s long-term commitment to the North Sea and to supporting our clients with high-quality multi-client data programs. Our extensive experience in the area, combined with our proven OBN imaging technologies, positions us to deliver valuable new insights for infrastructure-led exploration across this important cross-border region.” Viridien will apply its OBN processing and imaging technologies, including Time-Lag Full-Waveform Inversion, to the survey. As the company reported on May 18, the resulting dataset will deliver enhanced resolution and structural definition across the region’s complex geology and reservoirs. The Frigg field was discovered in 1971, and the plan for development and operation (PDO) was approved in 1974. The water depth at the area is 100 meters.

Revenue for the period was $247.0 million, while first-quarter adjusted EBITDA was $88.5 million, primarily impacted by the late contract start-up of the Odin, in addition to a credit loss provision of $8.4 million. “In the quarter, the Odin completed its mobilization from Mexico to the U.S. Gulf where operations were expected to start in February. However, start-up was delayed by additional contract preparation work and regulatory approvals. Looking ahead, we expect second quarter results to continue to be affected by the delayed start-up of the Odin, now anticipated to commence late June, as well as rigs transitioning between contracts.” Borr Drilling reported in its latest fleet status report that options were exercised for theJorojack-up rig from March 2026 to May 2026 bySiemens EnergyinGermany. Borr Drilling’s rig quartet lines up work in four corners of the world Morand elaborated:“Our contracting strategy continues to focus on covering near-term uncontracted days, balancing day rates with contract tenor. Since our last earnings report, we have secured eight contract commitments, representing over 1,100 days of additional firm work. Our full-year 2026 contract coverage increased to 71% at an average day rate of approximately $137,000 and coverage in the second half of the year now stands at 65%, as compared to 48% in our prior earnings report. “In the first quarter, we entered into an agreement for the acquisition of five premium jack-up rigs through a new joint venture in Mexico with an attractive valuation and financing structure. Upon closing, our fleet will in effect expand to 34 modern rigs. In April, we strengthened our capital structure through a $300 million convertible note offering, used to largely repurchase our existing 2028 convertible bonds. This transaction extended our maturity profile, lowered our financing cost, and increased the conversion price.” The firm’s unaudited results for the three months that ended on March 31, 2026, show a total operating revenue of $247 million, a decrease of $12.4 million or 5% compared to the fourth quarter of 2025. The first quarter adjusted EBITDA was $88.5 million, a drop of $16.7 million or 16% compared to the fourth quarter of 2025. This content is available after accepting the cookies. Borr Drilling anticipates step-up in rig contracting game Morand emphasized:“While the Middle East conflict has created near-term uncertainty, key tenders in the region continue to progress, with some modest delays. More broadly, in our view, recent events have strengthened the longer-term outlook for the sector, providing for a higher oil price and a renewed focus on energy security. “Shallow-water basins continue to represent an attractive resource, offering low-cost, short-cycle barrels that enable our customers to respond rapidly to the market backdrop. Due to the planning and budgeting processes of our customers, we expect that improved activity and day rates will lag the oil price development by 6 to 12 months, as evidenced after the military invasion of Ukraine, when day rates strongly increased. “Therefore, we are increasingly confident about the company’s prospects for 2027 and 2028 as we expect the disruptions from the conflict in the Middle East to be both substantial and long-lasting. With this backdrop, Borr Drilling’s expanded fleet is well placed to support our customers’ demand and deliver long-term shareholder value as the cycle develops.” This content is available after accepting the cookies. By aligning interests across these assets, we can enable better and faster project decisions.” The deal includes the divestment of a 19% interest in several discoveries in the Ringvei Vest area to Aker BP, encapsulating theGrosbeak,Røver Nord & Sør,Toppand, andSwisher. Equinor is the operator of Ringvei Vest, expected to be a cluster development of multiple oil and gas discoveries in the Troll-Fram area of the North Sea. This means that Aker BP is acquiring 19% in licenses PL 090JS, PL 248I, and PL 925 (Grosbeak), PL 248C (Swisher), PL 630 (Toppand), and PL 923 (Røver Nord and Røver Sør). North Sea field’s start-up augments Europe’s gas arsenal 48-years after discovery The agreement is perceived to strengthen the alignment of ownership interests in the licenses, supporting a more coordinated approach to development planning and project execution. The parties also aim to include theKveikjediscovery in the Ringvei Vest development. In addition, Equinor will divest a 38.16% interest and keep 61.84% in theFriggUK licence P2343 to Aker BP, enabling joint development of theOmega Alfadiscovery and the Frigg field oil resource potential in the area. The divestment will enable coordinated appraisal and development of the cross-border discovery. In return, Equinor will increase its ownership in the Wisting discovery in PL 537 and PL 537B from 35% to 42.5% and further strengthen its position in the largest undeveloped discovery on the NCS, while Aker BP will pay a cash consideration to the Norwegian state-owned giant of $23 million. Karl Johnny Hersvik, CEO of Aker BP, underlined:“This collaboration improves ownership alignment in areas where we see significant potential, while coordination with Equinor will further strengthen project outcomes. Omega Alfa has materially increased the prospectivity of the Frigg structure, including on the UK side of the border. “With a more balanced ownership position, we can now advance exploration drilling to test that potential, which could add meaningfully to the Yggdrasil resource base and support our ambition of producing more than one billion barrels from the area. Ringvei Vest is an area we have followed closely over time. The Kveikje discovery marked our entry, and we have now established a significant position in this prospective area.” This content is available after accepting the cookies. More oil unearthed in Norwegian waters as Equinor strikes black gold again These transactions are interpreted to support Equinor’s strategy to optimize its oil and gas portfolio and enable high-value, timely developments on the NCS towards 2035. The agreements, which have an effective date of January 1, 2026, are subject to regulatory approvals. Hove added:“These agreements will enable better development solutions, reduce complexity, and support value creation in line with our long-term strategy.” Take the spotlight and anchor your brand in the heart of the offshore world! Following what was described as the world’s first type approval (TAT) and factory acceptance testing (FAT) for this type of engine some three months ago, Swiss marine power company WinGD has completed another FAT for its ammonia-fueled two-stroke marine engine. Built by Yuchai Marine Power (YCMP), the X52DF-A-1.0 engine underwent testing in April, in the presence of China Classification Society. This latest FAT follows the completion of TAT and the first FAT of the ammonia-fueled engine platform at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Engine & Machinery (HHI-EMD) facility in South Korea,as announced in February. According to WinGD, the testing took place on the 52-bore engine to be installed on a 25,000m3 LPG/ammonia carrier and demonstrated stable engine performance and encouraging emissions results. NOx emissions during ammonia operation were significantly lower than those from conventional fuels, while N2O emissions remained minimal, contributing to an improved overall greenhouse gas profile. The engine will be installed on the first vessel for Tianjin Southwest Maritime in a series of four LPG/ammonia carriers currently under construction at CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding in China. “The successful completion of Factory Acceptance Testing in China provides further validation of our X-DF-A platform across key performance and safety parameters. The results demonstrate continued progress in the development and validation of ammonia-fuelled engine technology,”saidPeter Krähenbühl, VP Product Center at WinGD. “Bringing ammonia propulsion into commercial service depends on close cooperation across the maritime value chain, particularly between engine designers and engine builders. Working closely with partners such as YCMP allows us to translate development progress into reliable manufacturing and testing outcomes, supporting the safe and efficient deployment of ammonia-fuelled propulsion technologies.” Take the spotlight and anchor your brand in the heart of the offshore world!
