Containerships hitting the water this week have mostly gone to Far East-Mediterranean and Far East-Indian Subcontinent routes – a sign offirmingcargo volumes and freight rates on these trades. According to Alphaliner, CSSC (Tianjin) Shipbuilding last week delivered the 16,136 teuCMA CGM Cyranoto the French carrier, the third delivery of six sister methanol dual-fuelled vessels commissioned in February 2023 for around $175m each. CMA CGM has deployedCyranoto its Far East-East Mediterranean loop, the BEX2 (aka Phoenician Express), where it joins both its sisters, the rest of which will be completed by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Taiwan operator Wan Hai Lines continues to build on its standalone Far East-Mediterranean service FM1, sending the newly built 8,710 teuWan Hai 902to the route after its delivery from HD Hyundai Samho. Wan Hai 902is the second of four conventionally powered ships ordered in September 2024 for $127m each, and was delivered on 11 June, all the others will be completed by 2027. Launched last September, the FM1 marked Wan Hai’s return to the Far East-Mediterranean route after 16 years, andWan Hai 902will be the 11thship on the service. The deployment of the ywo new box ships on the FM1 represents an upsizing, as the service was initially run with 4,300-5,000 teu ships. Wan Hai’s privately owned associate, Interasia Lines, has been expanding into the China-India lane, and this week took delivery of the 7,092 teuInterasia Ambitionfrom Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding. It will be assigned to Interasia’s China-India ICI service operated with RCL and Wan Hai. This also represents a vessel upsizing, as it replaces the 4,890 teuInterasia Inspirationon the loop currently run with 3,000-7,000 teu ships. To meet high demand on the China-India trade, Maersk Line has deployed the 5,915 teuMaersk Ferrato, lately arrived from Tsuneishi Zhoushan, to fulfil an extra sailing. It’s one of four ships Japanese tonnage provider Nissen Kaiun commissioned in March 2023 for long-term charter to the Danish carrier. Only one newbuilding delivery this week is for the Far East-North Europe trade: Yang Ming took delivery of the 15,500 teuYM Wayfinderfrom HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. One of five sister units ordered in 2024,YM Wayfinder(pictured above) will be deployed to the Premier Alliance’s FE3 service, operated with MSC. Due to only a few ultra-large ships being ordered in 2023-2024, not many newbuildings have been assigned to the Far East-North Europe lanes.

Challenge Group is expanding its presence in India and China with new freighter services from Liège to Mumbai and Shanghai, joining a growing list of cargo operators betting on Asia’s manufacturing and export growth. The carrier said it would launch twice-weekly 777-300ERSF flights to Mumbai and three weekly services to Shanghai from July, strengthening links between Asia, Europe, the US and South America. The Mumbai operation replaces existing 767 services with larger aircraft, increasing available capacity into India’s commercial capital. The move comes amid a broader rush by cargo operators into India, one of the fastest-growing airfreight markets globally. According to Rotate data, freighter capacity between India and Europe is up 24% year on year, outpacing growth on many other major trade lanes. At the same time, Emirates SkyCargo has added dedicated freighter capacity into India, while operators including Atlas Air, FedEx and AeroLogic were set to begin services to Navi Mumbai as the city’s new airport cargo infrastructure comes online. Source: Rotate The capacity growth reflects rising confidence in India’s role as an alternative manufacturing base to China, as well as growing exports of pharmaceuticals, electronics and other high-value products. Recent market data suggests demand is continuing to absorb much of the additional capacity. WorldACD reported that chargeable weight from India to Europe increased 9% week on week in late May, helping drive a 13% increase in overall exports from the Middle East and South Asia region to Europe. By contrast, exports from the region to the US declined 4%, with Indian-origin shipments down 2%. Despite the influx of new freighter capacity, there are few signs of oversupply. Indian forwarder LIGI Logistics this week described export capacity as “tight” across India and much of Asia, with limited spot space and extended booking lead times. The company also highlighted continuing operational constraints at Air India and ongoing congestion at Nhava Sheva port, suggesting supply chains remain under pressure. Rates have eased from the extraordinary levels seen immediately after the outbreak of the Iran conflict, but remain relatively robust. According to TAC Index data, spot rates from India to Europe slipped from $3.93 per kg at the end of April to $3.73 per kg by 29 May, suggesting a gradual normalisation rather than a market correction. Challenge said the new routes would support pharmaceuticals, technology shipments, industrial equipment, project cargo and other specialist freight, while strengthening the role of Liège as a gateway for global cargo flows. Chief commercial officer Or Zak said the new services represented “another important step in the execution of our long-term growth strategy”. “India and China continue to play an increasingly important role in global trade, and by investing in direct connectivity to both markets, we are creating new opportunities for our customers while strengthening the links between Asia, Europe, the US and South America,” he said. However, not everyone is convinced the Indian market can absorb unlimited new capacity. Speaking toThe Loadstarlast month, Cargolux chief executive Richard Forson described India as a market attracting growing interest from airlines, but warned that profitability could suffer if capacity growth outpaced demand. “India is another country that is ramping up, albeit not as quickly as China, but they are ramping up the ability to produce and distribute,” he said. He added: “The careful thing for India is if you keep the market in equilibrium, everybody will make a living. But if it goes out of equilibrium, where there’s too much capacity, then players will suffer.” For now, though, the market appears to be holding up. Tight capacity, growing Europe-bound demand and continued investment by airlines suggest India remains one of the most attractive growth opportunities in global air cargo, even as carriers risk crowding into the market.Even airlines without direct India expansion plans are positioning for future growth. Japan Airlines recently strengthened its cargo offering through its partnership with Kalitta Air, highlighting the industry’s continuing focus on Asia’s manufacturing, technology and ecommerce supply chains. Chinese hi-tech exports to the US surged following Trump’s court tariff defeat

Chinese containerised exports to the US have outperformed those of other Asian origins after tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) were lifted, enabling more goods, especially those related to solar power and the AI boom, to be shipped, boosting transpacific rates. US customs data showed that in May, Chinese exports to the US were up 35% year-on-year, the highest since March 2021. This strong performance is part of a broader export boom, with China’s overall exports rising 19% in May. In February, the US Supreme Court ruled that the US president did not have the authority to impose tariffs under the IEEPA regulations, thus invalidating tariffs that had been placed on imports from China and other countries. On the very same day, the Trump administration invoked Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 to impose a new global 10% tariff on nearly all US imports, with plans to increase it to 15%. This reset the playing field for the US’ trade partners, with China’s average tariff rate dropping from 32% to 24%. Linerlytica today said that the surge in China’s exports to the US is heavily linked to global demand for high-tech goods, particularly in the AI and solar power sectors. The disruption in crude oil and LNG shipments arising from the Strait of Hormuz closure is persuading households to turn to renewable energy. In terms of value, China’s total exports of integrated circuits soared 110% year-on-year in May, in part driven by unit price surges. Exports of high-tech goods surged 50% in value in May from a year ago. On Friday, the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index showed Shanghai-US West Coast rates gained 12% from 5 June, to $5,101 per 40ft, while Shanghai-US East Coast went up by 10% to $6,321 per 40ft. However, Linerlytica added that that tight slot availability is also helping to push up freight, especially to the US west coast. “Transpacific freight rates to the US west coast have surged past $6,000 per 40ft from $1,800 per 40ft in February, with the higher rates set to last to July backed by the increased cargo demand,” Linerlytica said. The boost provided by the Section 122 tariffs set to expire on 24 July is likely to be extended with additional Section 301 tariffs on Structural Excess Capacity currently delayed. To create a more permanent tariff regime, the US Trade Representative (USTR) launched a new Section 301 investigation in March 2026, targeting 16 economies, including China and several Asian countries, for allegedly over-manufacturing goods. However, the imposition of Section 301 tariffs has been delayed to June 2027 to give US manufacturers time to reduce their dependence on Chinese legacy chips without causing immediate supply chain shocks. Maersk is looking to capitalise on the “firm” China-Australia lane with its latest “lean service” announcement. The Danish shipping line on Friday announced a new service serving the Greater China region to/from Australia. The Qilin service will link Shanghai, Sydney and Melbourne from 24 July and complement Maersk’s existing Dragon service. “The launch of this premium product offers significantly improved transit times from Shanghai to Sydney and Melbourne and will better support your supply chain needs into these markets,” the carrier told customers, and added that it reflected a “continued commitment” to those in the region. Maersk claimed the “lean rotation” could offer transit time improvements between the three cities, with weekly departures. China is Australia’s largest trading partner, and while Australia exports mostly raw materials and food, the fronthaul transit from China is primarily finished manufactured products. Shanghai–Sydney spot rates on the SCFI jumped 19% in a single week recently, following increases of 7%, 14%, and 12% in the three preceding weeks, according to Australian forwarder Magellan Logistics, with MSC, CMA CGM, Cosco, and others implementing new surcharges on 1 May. Indeed, the Freightos terminal notes that rates from Shanghai to Melbourne saw a peak in early May of $2,043 per teu, but recently reduced to $1,275 per teu. “This is not a single carrier testing the market, it is an industry-wide move, and the alignment across carriers on both the quantum and timing of increases suggests the pricing will hold,” said David Thatcher, founder of Magellan Logistics. “Rates that held relatively steady through the early part of the year have now moved sharply, and the coordinated nature of carrier rate actions in May signals that the increases are here for the medium term,” he added. He explained that Australian importers were facing tighter equipment availability, rising peak season surcharges, and stronger airfreight pricing as the Red Sea disruption and Middle East tensions continued to distort global shipping networks.

The China Container Industry Association (CCIA) expects manufacturing output to drop by as much as 30% this year, because of a rebalancing of supply and demand. Chinese manufacturers produce 95% of the world’s containers and, after record output in 2021, 2024, and 2025, downward pressure on prices is expected. Last year, China’s container output totalled 6.45m teu, the third highest after 2021 and 2024. And during China’s 14th ‘Five-Year Plan’, between 2021 and 2025, annual container output averaged 5.4m teu, a 70% increase over the 13th plan. CCIA noted that container manufacturing had weathered a full cycle of fluctuations – from a severe shortage during Covid, to capacity expansion during the Red Sea crisis, and the supply-demand rebalance today. The association suggests the container supply chain will be under pressure, and adjusted, this year, with new-container production expected to be between 4.5m and 5m teu. Last year, driven by multiple factors such as high containership deliveries, the Red Sea crises, slow returns of empty containers in Europe, and China’s export surplus, container production was pushed up. Downward pressure on container prices resulted, and Singamas, the fourth-largest container maker, said in its 2025 financials that prices fell to $1,752 per teu that year, down from $1,985 in 2024. Indeed, the CCIA noted that prices of dry containers had declined for four consecutive years, returning to pre-2020 levels. The customer composition had changed accordingly, with liner operators accounting for 55.4% of sales, up by 9.3 percentage points, while container leasing companies’ share declined accordingly. This was attributed to a higher inventory of containers held by lessors. Meanwhile, Cosco Shipping Development, parent of Shanghai Universal Logistics Equipment (also known as Dong Fang International Containers), indicted by the US Department of Justice on 19 May accused of colluding with CIMC, CXIC and Singamas to raise container prices by restricting output, has released a statement saying it had yet to be formally notified of the DoJ indictment, and its operations were proceeding normally.

On Friday, the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index showed 4% week-on-week growth in the Shanghai-North Europe rate, to $2,584 per 40ft and a 2% rise in the Shanghai-Mediterranean rate, to $3,263 per 40ft. For the transpacific, the SCFI registered a 4% increase in the Shanghai-US West Coast rate, to $2,826 per 40ft and a 3% hike in the Shanghai-US East Coast rate, to $3,812 per 40ft. During the recent Taipei Shipowners’ Association’s meeting, Yang Ming chairman Chuck Tsai Feng-ming said the usual Q3 peak season – when Asian factories export consumer goods to the US and Europe for Christmas – had been brought forward. He explained that the US-Israel-Iran war had tied up 1.5% of shipping capacity in the Strait of Hormuz and the resulting hike in oil prices had made mainline operators raise freight rates this month to reflect higher costs and tight shipping supply and demand. Dr Tsai said: “We’re seeing bookings coming in for this month, and we see a recovery in cargo volumes. Therefore we believe that the container shipping market has entered the peak season ahead of schedule.” Linerlytica said Asia-North Europe cargo was being quoted at $2,800-$3,200 per 40ft for the final two weeks of the month, up from current levels of $2,400-$2,500, as they tested the market with a second round of rate hikes. The consultancy said: “Space availability is slightly lower in weeks 19 and 20 due mainly to blanked sailings by Ocean and Premier alliance partners. Gemini carriers Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd are also signalling a more flexible blanked sailing strategy as they move away from the rigid arrangement in the past, where blanked sailings were limited to the Chinese New Year and Golden Week holiday windows.” Linerlytica said a similar situation was being seen on the transpacific, where spot Asia-US West Coast rates were quoted at $2,800 per 40ft, substantially higher than the full-year contract rates of less than $2,000. The consultancy added: “The low number of new ship deliveries in the past two months has kept the market severely short of ships as charter rates continue to edge upwards, and vessel space remains tight, with continued freight rate increases expected through the second half of May.” Linerlytica’s figures show that between April and June, only 16 newbuildings, for deployment to the Far East-North Europe, Far East-Mediterranean and transpacific lanes, will be delivered.

Newbuilding orders over the past week show that Cosco Shipping Lines is on a fleet expansion drive. The Chinese state-controlled operator’s subsidiary. OOCL. has ordered a dozen 13,600 teu LNG dual-fuelled ships at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding for $2.2bn for delivery between late 2028 and early 2030. With this order, OOCL will take delivery of 33 newbuildings over the next five years, with 21 other containership newbuildings, ranging from 18,000 to 24,000 teu, on order at affiliated shipbuilders Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering and Dalian Cosco KHI . Cosco is also backing a dozen 9,200 teu and four 3,100 teu vessels Greek tonnage provider Costamare commissioned at Dalian Shipbuilding. The larger ships will be chartered to Cosco for 15 years upon delivery in 2028 to 2030, the others on eight-year charters to the Chinese operator upon delivery between 2027 and 2028. The total cost, of $1.32bn, is understood to be funded with Chinese leasing companies, with the 9,200 teu ships said to be priced at $110m each. MB Shipbrokers said Costamare’s commission appears to be one of the longest single orders of container vessels contracted by a non-operating owner. The Danish broker said: “Deliveries scheduled from 2028 through 2030 indicate that the project has been in the pipeline for some time.” Meanwhile, Sinotrans Container Lines, an intra-Asia carrier, might be making its debut in the larger vessel segment, after its shareholder, China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES), commissioned four 8,200 teu and four 1,800 teu ships at China Merchants Heavy Industry for delivery in 2027 and 2028. The 8,200 teu ships are said to cost $105m each, while the feeders are priced around $34m each. CMES said the ships would optimise its container fleet capacity, improve trade services and strengthen its market competitiveness. Sinolines became a CMES subsidiary in 2021, shortly after the China Merchants and Sinotrans groups merged. The wider group appears to be consolidating its container shipping business, withincreasing purchasesof stock in domestic liner and logistics group Antong Holdings. Sinolines’ fellow state-controlled shipping line, China United, a regional carrier, this week ordered newbuildings for the first time in four years – four 6,400 teu ships at CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding for $300m. The ships, with 1,150 reefer slots each, would be delivered in late 2029. CULines’s last order was in 2022, for a 7,000 teu pair at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, intending to deploy the vessels to the Asia-Europe lane. However, the freight market corrected in 2023 and the carrier sold the ships to Wan Hai Lines. Although CULines abandoned its Asia-Europe and transpacific services, it has been busy enlarging its market share in the Far East-Red Sea lane, pouncing on SeaLead Shipping’s downsized portfolio. Greek shipowner M/Maritime is making its debut in the container segment, after a decade in the dry bulk market. The John Mytilineos-controlled company has ordered a 2,800 teu pair at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, for delivery in 2028. Each priced around $50m. The line said: “These transactions highlight M/Maritime’s disciplined growth model — strengthening its established dry bulk presence while selectively expanding into adjacent segments.” And the firm charter market for box ships has attracted Greek shipowners not previously in the segment. M/Maritime’s more established compatriot peer, Euroseas, is stretching its feeder ship orderbook to 10. The Aristides Pittas-controlled Euroseas has ordered a 1,800 teu pair at Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering, costing $33m each, and scheduled for delivery in 2028. The order comes with options for two more ships. Euroseas has also exercised options for two more 2,800 teu high-reefer boxships at Huanghai Shipbuilding, after an initial pair was booked in March, for $47m each. The second pair is scheduled for delivery in October 2028 and January 2029. These will be equipped with more than 1,000 reefer plugs.
An underwater data center (UDC) connected directly to an offshore wind farm has been put into operation off the coast of China’s Lingang Special Area of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone,Chinese media reports. The project, said to be the world’s first of this kind, wasofficially launched in June 2025with the signing of a cooperation agreement between the administrative committee of the Lingang Special Area of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, Shanghai Lingang Special Area Investment Holding Group, and HiCloud Technology. According to information from June 2025, the project is being developed in two phases. The first phase is set up as a demonstration facility with a capacity of 2.3 MW, which is scaled up to 24 MW through the project’s second phase. In October 2025,the Chinese government announcedthat the construction of“the world’s first wind-powered underwater data center (UDC) project”was completed, with the project providing“a demonstration for the green and low-carbon development of computing infrastructure and for the local consumption of offshore wind power.” In February this year,Lingang Special Area saidthe CNY 1.6 billion (approximately $228 million) UDC with a total capacity of 24 MW was launched. The data center is located 10 meters under water, between the first and second phases of Lin-gang’s offshore wind farm, with the UDC modules positioned adjacent to offshore wind turbines, using seawater for natural cooling and electricity supplied directly by the wind farm. According to the project developers, the system reduces electricity consumption by 22.8%, eliminates water use, and cuts land use by more than 90%. The facility’s power usage effectiveness (PUE) is maintained at around 1.15, which is among industry-leading levels, according to its developers. The GPU servers installed within the underwater modules support applications ranging from big data annotation to the development of domestic large language models (LLMs), while enabling coordinated allocation of computing resources between offshore and onshore facilities. Computing clusters from companies, including China Telecom, have already been deployed, alongside local computing service providers such as LinkWise, Lingang Special Area said earlier this year.
